For the last two weeks we have been doing hockey with Dan from NZ Hockey as part of our sport this term. He has been teaching us a lot of skills such as dribbling, passing, and juggling. We always end each session with a game. This is where we get to put our skills to use.
For our Speciality Days this term, the children in Year 5 and 6 are working their way through the technological design process.
The children in Room 10 are currently working on developing maps of their classroom as part of their Measurement and Geometry focus in Maths. They have created a scale, birds eye view plan of their classroom, and are now in the process of constructing to scale furniture to place around their classroom map. Once the children have made all of the furniture, they will then arrange it around their 'virtual classroom'. We will be inviting students from other classrooms to vote for their favourite design, and then set up our room to match the layout on the winning map.
As part of our focus on Space this term, the children in Room 10 have begun a brand new art unit all about 'Aliens'. The students have already created their very own coloured paper to use during the collage stage of their artwork, and are now working on designing and putting together their outer space creature. The students have also created a space themed background for their alien to be mounted on and it is already easy to see that there will be some stupendous looking creatures come the end of the unit.
During the last few weeks Mr T's Numeracy class have been focusing on Measurement. As part of this unit of work, the children have been designing, testing, recording, and modifying paper planes, all with the goal in mind of creating the plane that will fly the furtest. Each child selected their most succuessful model to be flown in the competition held today.
Today the children continued to work on their pou designs, with some making a start on transferring and painting onto the timber posts.
Every second Thursday the Year 5 and 6 children take part in 'Specialty Day'. The children are grouped into their house teams and rotate around the four Year 5 & 6 classrooms. In Room 10 the children have been working alongside Mr T on developing a piece of artwork based upon themselves and the people in their lives who are special to them. The children have used kowhaiwhai patterns to 'tell their story' in a visual context, and used colours that relate directly to the particular people they have represented in their artwork.
After another awesome art session many of the children in Room 10 have now completed their Tapa Cloths. The kids have done an amazing job, working with a variety of different media to create these traditional forms of art with a modern twist.
As part of our Visual Arts programme, the children of Room 10 are currently in the process of creating their very own Tapa Cloths. Check back to see some examples of our finished pieces...or pop into Room 10 to see them on display :)
